Police: ‘business as usual’ in Manchester and Salford
Date published: 11 August 2011
Members of the public are being reassured that it is ‘business as usual’ in Manchester and Salford following the disorder on Tuesday night.
Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Garry Shewan says the Force is now in the process of returning the two areas to ‘normality.’
He said: “I want to stress as far as possible it business as usual.”
Mr Shewan continued: "We are working incredibly hard with our communities and businesses to reassure them we will maintain that high visibility presence and also encourage people that it is safe to come into out towns.
"Of course we understand there is nervousness among some people but we want people to go about their daily business as usual.”
Mr Shewan said he wants to “address some of the rumours” about what is “really going on.”
He said: "Firstly, we have not cancelled any football matches or events such as the Moss Side Carnival and we want people to come out and enjoy these events.
"Also, I want to stress to our communities that we are not aware of any far-right groups co-ordinating the disorder.
"This was criminality, pure and simple. It had racial element to it. It was just mindless violence so I want to let people know that there is no evidence to say any political groups organised or played a part in the disorder."
