Police authority praise riot response

Date published: 11 August 2011

Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) has condemned the disturbances in Manchester and Salford on Tuesday night and praised Greater Manchester Police for their hard work and dedication.

Councillor Paul Murphy, Chairman of GMPA, said: “The looting and disorder seen in Salford and Manchester are despicable, shameful acts carried out by a mindless few who have no respect for their communities. There is no legitimate reason for this disorder, other than sheer criminality and thuggery.

“Greater Manchester Police has been faced with unprecedented and widespread levels of violence of disorder and the Police Authority praises the Force for their hard work and dedication.

“There have been many messages of support for the police over the last few hours and this support is now needed more than ever, so we can bring those responsible for attacking our cities to justice.

“These thugs are in the minority and do not represent the proud communities of both cities. Now is the time for all communities to work together with the police and send a message to these criminals that they will not bring us to our knees and they will not extinguish our sense of community spirit.

“A number of arrests have already been made and the police have made it clear that they know who the perpetrators are and they will be caught. If you know anyone who was involved in last night’s disorder then please contact GMP on 0161 872 5050.”
