Michael and Cheryl on their wedding day
A couple from Castleton who won a wedding competition from a radio station tied the knot this week.
Michael Fernandes, 22 and Cheryl Fernandes (nee Holden), 24, were one of three couples to get married at the Manchester Museum after they won a competition from 106.1 Rock Radio.
The couple, who have been together almost 10 years, said they would never be able to afford to get married, however, they won the hearts of the public and gained their votes to win the competition.
The pair have been together since school and had their first child when Mrs Fernandes was 16 and Mr Fernandes was just 14 years old.
They now have three children, Liam, 8, Bryan, 3, and Archie, 1.
People told the couple that they wouldn’t make it, but they proved them wrong when they said their nuptials on Thursday (4 August).
They said “I do” at a joint ceremony with the other competition winners Leeann Heeney and Rob Hall and Rock Radio presenter Dewsbury and his partner Jo.
The radio station provided everything for the wedding, more than the couple could have ever dreamed off.
Liam, 8, was the best man at the service and Mr Fernandes said there were some surprises along the way courtesy of the radio station including Star Wars style Stormtroopers.
The couple entered the competition in July and just three weeks after finding out they had won they got married.
Mr Fernandes described the day as “amazing,” adding: “Cheryl looked beautiful”
He said: “Even if we won the lottery it would take ages until we got married because of all the planning but Rock Radio did everything – it was the best thing we could have ever won.”
