Woman rewarded for recycling pledge

Date published: 01 August 2011

A Middleton woman has been rewarded with a £100 high street shopping voucher, for pledging to recycle more and waste less.

Susan Horsfield signed the ‘Recycle Pledge,’ launched by Recycle for Greater Manchester, during in this year’s Recycle Week.

Ms Horsfield said: “We visited the road show at our local supermarket because I wanted to order a new bin for our paper and card recycling, whilst there I signed up to the pledge and I also learnt that I can recycle my empty aerosols and clean foil in my mixed recycling bin too.

“With this knowledge and the arrival of my new bin I will be able to keep my pledge and recycle a little more.”

She added: “Finding out I had won the £100 voucher was a fantastic surprise and came just at the right time, so I plan to treat myself and go on a bit of a shopping spree.”

Recycle Week is a national campaign which aims to increase residents’ awareness of what can be recycled and to ensure that recycling figures increase and waste is diverted from landfill.

Councillor Neil Swannick, Chairman of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) said: “In Greater Manchester we currently recycle 34 per cent of all household waste a figure we hope to increase to 50 per cent by 2015.

“The Recycle Pledge is a great way of encouraging residents to recycle more items both at home and away, including shampoo bottles, glass jars and juice cartons at the kerbside or old carpets and electrical items at Household Waste Recycling Centres.

“This is the first time we have run a pledge and asked residents to make a commitment to recycling more and the response has been phenomenal with 1,268 residents pledging to recycle more and that is just for the month of June.

“It doesn’t end there, residents who have pledged will be contacted on a regular basis with handy tips and hints to help them fulfil their pledge and continue to reduce, re-use and recycle.”
