A new book collection launched in Rochdale has been described as a “lasting legacy to an inspirational couple.”

‘The Maskew Collection of English Literature and philosophy resources’ has been launched thanks to the generosity and vision of Annie and Frank Maskew, a Rochdale couple who met in Rochdale library in the early 1950’s and married in 1955.

Mrs Maskew, a teacher at the former Queen Elizabeth High School died in 2006; she left a bequest to the library in her will, to be used on English literature and philosophy to ensure classic works are available for future generations.

Mrs Maskew has been described as “amazing” and a teacher who brought English ‘to life.’

Mr Maskew was a deep thinker with an enthusiasm for exploring and reasoning about the world.

The Collection, available in Rochdale Central Library, comprises of English literature titles including classic books for adults and children.

In addition a series of special events are being planned, including a monthly ‘Philosophy Coffee’ afternoon starting in late September.

Paul Young, Head of Customers and Communities said: “We’re proud of the Maskew Collection and these inspiring events we’re developing will help make it accessible to all.

“Anyone who has a passion for classic literature and those prize winning novels or those with an interest in philosophy will be in for a treat!

“The collection will be a lasting legacy to an inspirational couple… Annie who was devoted to inspiring others with her love of literature, and a fitting tribute to her husband Frank who she met in the library.”
