Youth Council speaks out on £64m challenge

Date published: 26 July 2011

Rochdale’s Youth Council has been debating the £64 million savings challenge faced by RMBC.

Led by senior council officers, the session looked at the plans in detail.

The group gave some strong views on the savings plan currently out for public consultation.

Hassan Akhtar, Deputy MP for the Youth Council, said: “Our debates focused on education and skills for the borough. This is something that’s really important to young people.

“We want to know regeneration of our borough is a priority; that new businesses with more jobs will be available when we leave education.

“The plans talk about a theme called ‘Promoting Success and Independence’ which looks to do just that.

“This will also empower vulnerable people to become more independent, which can only be a good thing.”

The group’s feedback will go towards helping members and senior officers develop more detailed plans.

Councillor Colin Lambert, Council Leader, said: “It is fantastic to see our young people take such an active role in the borough’s future. They’ve provided some excellent feedback, which will really help us to shape our plans.”

Public consultation continues on the council’s outline plan to save £64 million. Residents can view and rate the plan online at www.rochdale.gov.uk/64million or in libraries.

Feedback must be given by 11 August 2011.
