Wildlife haven for youngsters

Date published: 23 July 2011

The finishing touches have been made to Langley Sure Start Children’s Centre’s exciting new outdoor classroom.

Children, parents, centre staff and staff from Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale completed the final planting session to create a wildlife haven within the grounds of the Children’s Centre.

Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale in partnership with social landlord Riverside secured Lottery funding to create the haven.

Diane Smith, Nursery Manager at Langley Sure Start Children’s Centre, said: “The scheme is fantastic and will provide the centre with grounds to deliver Forest School activities. It will enable children and their families to enjoy the sensory experiences within a natural setting.”

Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale supported by Riverside Housing Group secured Lottery funding to create an outdoor classroom with a focus on nature. The project features a native tree planting scheme, dead wood habitats, a wildflower area, log seating and footpaths which lead youngsters into safe, harmonious learning zones.

Adam Holt, Contracts Manager at Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale, added: “We’re delighted to be using our experience of creating play spaces to assist Langley Sure Start Children’s Centre with their outdoor classroom. The new area will provide an exciting environment for children to learn about nature and wildlife.”

Sian Martin Baez, Regeneration Officer at Riverside, added: “This is exactly the kind of environmental improvement that will add to the long term enhancement of the Langley estate. We are proud to be supporting Groundwork with this project and with similar projects that will promote the importance of environmental nurturing for future generations”
