Tip closure will lead to fly tipping, says Councillor

The closure of the Peel Lane Tip in Heywood will lead to an “inevitable increase in fly tipping” according to Heywood North Liberal Democrat councillor, Peter Rush.

The Peel Lane Tip is due to close as part of cost cutting measures being carried out by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA).

Speaking at the full council meeting on Wednesday (20 July), Councillor Rush asked: “What additional measures does the Council propose to take to counter this problem?”
In reply, Councillor Martin Burke, Labours Cabinet member for the Environment said that: “The Council will monitor the situation.”

But Councillor Rush said that that is not enough and the Council must act now.

Councillor Rush added: “Whilst I can not and will not condone fly tipping, I believe that the decision taken by the Waste Disposal Authority will by default encourage it.

“It’s obvious that if you close a well used tip like Peel Lane, then there will be a small number of people who won’t think twice about dumping their rubbish in public places, they have no pride in Heywood.

“GMWDA may be saving money through this closure but the Council’s clean up teams are going to be kept very busy in the future as a result and that’s going to cost the people of Heywood dearly.”
