Tournament raises £500 for charity

Four teams have taken part in a football tournament which has raised £500 for charity.

The Unity Cup, now in its second year, saw Wardleworth FC, Asia FC, Roca Juniors and Rochdale Asia FC come together to raise money for the Abaseen Foundation and Barnados North West.

The £500 will be split equally between the two charities.

The purpose of the day was two-fold, namely the aim was to raise funds but the clubs also hoped to strengthen relationships between the participating clubs.

Despite the torrential rain the day has been described as a “showcase event” which “brightened up” the day for all the spectators.

Those in attendance included the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Alan Godson and the sponsors of the event West Midlands Solicitors.

The games consisted of all four teams playing each other in 30 minutes matches. This was followed by a trophy presentation.

Azmat Khan Manager of Wardleworth FC, said: “This event was great to see so many players enjoying good football, it was a chance for a lot of the youngsters to meet players from the different clubs and everyone really got on with one another.

“The best part of the event was knowing that all the clubs were doing something positive and were donating money to people who are not as fortunate as us”.

Saeed Ahmed manager of Asia FC added: “Although the heavens opened up and the rain came down throughout the event soaking everyone to the skin, it was a pleasure to be part of the Asian footballing community in raising much needed funds for those less fortunate than us, those that not only face the elements but difficulties beyond our comprehension.

“Hopefully our humble soaking will provide some goodness to deprived children elsewhere”.
Aftab Hussain manager of Roca Juniors FC, said: “The money raised will help people who are in need and it is a pleasure being part of this event”.

Sheraz Hussain manager of Rochdale Asia FC concluded: “We would like to thank the organisers, teams, players, managers and sponsors for a wonderful event.

“The charities are the biggest winners and RAFC were delighted to be part of this great cause. It was great to see all local teams coming together for a very worthwhile cause which shows that Rochdale people are very caring.”
