School girl wins street naming competition
Date published: 19 July 2011
A 10-year-old girl from Heybrook Primary School has won a competition to name a new street in Hamer.
Fahmida Reemi’s suggestion ‘Oak Tree Terrace’ was the winning name for the street, adjacent to Athol Street, where a ten bungalow development is being built.
The homes are part of a regeneration project which is funded by Regenda and a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.
The site’s contractor, CSC Construction, ran the competition. They received over 20 responses from the school which they narrowed down to five. The winning name ‘Oak Tree Terrace’ was then chosen by Rochdale Council.
Fahmida said she came up with the name after seeing another street name called Pear Tree Crescent; she added: “I didn’t think I would win.”
Fazal Miah, Fahmida’s dad, said: “I am very happy, I feel good about it and I am proud of my daughter.
“I am happy she got involved with something outside of school and I hope it will encourage her to do more in the future.”
