Royal invitation for inspirational man

Date published: 18 July 2011

Hopwood Hall College’s Uniformed Public Service Curriculum Manager, Terry Morley, has been recognised for his outstanding commitment to the education and preparation of young people for public service – with a visit to this year’s Royal Garden Party.

Mr Morley, of Bamford, aspired for a career in the armed services from an early age.

His pursuit of this goal began at 16 but at the age of 22 his career was cut short. A car accident in Ireland resulted in a spinal injury that confined Mr Morley to a wheelchair.

Mr Morley’s strength, motivation and determination took him through a journey of re-educating himself.

As Curriculum Manager of UPS he has worked his way through the ranks, as he planned to do in the services.

Under his leadership, Hopwood’s UPS department went from 80 students to 300 students, offering a diverse range of courses from entry level to level 3. Today Hopwood’s UPS department is the biggest in the country.

Mr Morley and his wife Elaine, a Lecturer in Business at Hopwood Hall College, were invited to the Royal Garden Party on 12 July 2011.

They enjoyed the prestigious event with many people from around the country from various sectors; these ranged from education and public services to charitable organisations and civil services.

Mr Morley said: “It was a great honour to speak with the Queen and the Queen’s family, all of whom were so welcoming and friendly. The day and the experience was something that will stay with me forever.”

A spokesperson for the College, said: “Terry is an inspiration to all that know him and a great example of the success and happiness anyone can achieve, despite the challenges that may have to be faced.”
