Football match in aid of hospice
Date published: 16 July 2011
Fundraisers joined together on Saturday (16 July) for a charity football match in aid of Springhill Hospice.
The game was organised by Staff Nurse Alex Woodcock, who is keen to raise much needed funds for the charity.
The 11-a-side game held on the 3G pitch at Cardinal Langley School, Middleton, saw friends of Miss Woodcock come together for the cause.
Miss Woodcock’s boyfriend Matt Armstrong captained Team Armstrong and friend Paul Worthington captained Team Worthington.
Each player paid £5 to play and Miss Woodcock sold cakes and refreshments to help raise money.
Miss Woodcock, 22, said: “I decided to hold this event because I know that Springhill Hospice is always looking for different ways for people to raise money, even if it is just a small amount.
“I figured this was a quite an easy and fun way to raise money and it has been pretty easy to organise.
“I want to say thank you to all the players who have turned up.”
Miss Woodcock hoped to raise £150 from the match. This is her second fundraiser in the past two weeks. Last week, along with friends, she raised £125 at the High Crompton Beer Walk.
Miss Woodcock also paid thanks to the following: Cardinal Langley School for free use of the pitch, David Szuminski for his refereeing services, Macaroon for the donation of ten cakes, family friend Deborah Sergeant who baked and donated 24 cakes, the Co-operative in Milnrow for donating the refreshments and Bamford Convenience Store for donating a bottle of champagne for the winning team.
