Ed Miliband, the Leader of the Labour party, sang the praises of the Labour group in control of Rochdale Council during his brief visit to the town today (Friday 15 July).
The Labour group, led by Councillor Colin Lambert, took control of the council following the collapse of the Liberal Democrats in Rochdale in December, which ultimately led to the fall of the Lib-Dem/Conservative Coalition group running the council at the time.
When asked about the work Labour is doing in the town. Mr Miliband praised the group and its leadership.
Speaking to Rochdale Online, he said: “I think Colin Lambert is doing a brilliant job leading Rochdale Council.
“And I think from talking to him what you’ve got is somebody who, despite very difficult circumstances in terms of the cuts, is determined to make a difference to people in Rochdale, to show that Labour can be on people’s side.
“He’s proposing something in housing which no other council round the country is proposing, which is a genuine mutual involving local people, employees and others in the decisions and the ownership of what matters and I think that shows the kind of innovation that he is determined to bring to the people of Rochdale and indeed to the way he runs the council.”
