Hair and beauty salons in health spotlight

Date published: 14 July 2011

Hairdressers and beauticians from across the borough stepped out of their salon for a day to revitalise themselves at a ‘Healthy Salon’ event at Heywood Sports Village this week.

The day focused on the health and wellbeing of staff and employers in the health and beauty sector.

Andy Glover from Rochdale Borough Council said he hoped that as well as picking up advice themselves, they can also pass positive health messages to their customers.

He said: “We’re always looking for ways to support people’s health and wellbeing, and this event has been really well received.

“Many employers are recognising the business sense of creating healthier workplaces. Investing in the health of employees can bring business benefits such as increased productivity, reduced sickness absence and better staff retention.”

The event was hosted by Rochdale Borough Council in partnership with Link4Life and NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale

There was a huge variety of advice and support on offer, including weight management, dermatitis, stop smoking, oral health, physical activity, personal safety, five ways to wellbeing, sexual health, cancer awareness and much more.

A series of talks and demonstrations covered the hot topics in health and wellbeing. There were also free personal health checks including BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The event concluded with a presentation of certificates by the Mayor, Councillor Alan Godson, to each of the salons who attended.
