Charity match raises £300 for hospice

An annual charity football game has raised £300 for the Springhill Hospice.

The game, Legends V Wardleworth, now in its third year, saw ex Wardleworth players dust down their boots and take on the current Wardleworth team.

The match was held on Heybrook playing fields and many people turned out to support the cause.

Wardleworth showed no mercy from the kick off, still licking their wounds from last years game where the Legends scored a very late equaliser.

The youthful side of Wardleworth took the lead with a free kick that sailed past the Legends goalie.

Legends came back strong with a neat move where Mumtaz Khan smashed a volley past the Wardleworth keeper to level things up.

The legends made a few substitutions and gave every Legend a good run, some lasting longer than others but most where just happy in taking part in the event.

The youngsters ended the first half on a high and scored 2 quick fire goals from Qasim Khan taking a 3-1 lead.

The second half saw a bombardment of great efforts from the Legends but the goalie and a resolute defence showed great experience and fitness to keep the Legends at bay.

With minutes closing and the Legends panting Wardleworth scored again and finally put the game to bed.

Councillor Farooq Ahmed said: “This kind of event makes me proud of my own community. This football team over the years has done some brilliant work in the community and I am always privileged to help and support this club”.

Azmat Khan Manager of Wardleworth FC said: “This event is now in its 3rd year and it always creates a good buzz in the community.

“We all appreciate the support that the fans give us and we always enjoy every bit of it.

“It’s brilliant for the new young players to see who the founder members of the club are, and we always look to help out others as a football club.

“I would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors Whitestone solicitors and Chunky Chicken because with out the support of our sponsors this club would not be here”.
