Date published: 01 July 2011

Proud parents came together on Friday (1 July) to watch their sons and daughters mark the end of their college life with a passing out ceremony.

The students, from Hopwood Hall College’s Uniformed Services course, took part in the parade, in front of a large crowd which included dignitaries from across the North West.

Following the parade the class of 2011 showcased some of the skills they have learnt on the course.

The Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester Mr Warren Smith, described the showcase as “remarkable.” He praised the students and told them: “You are a credit to your families’ and to the college.”

Awards were then given out for:
• Best P.E student
• Best endeavour
• Best orienteer
• Best overall student

Memorial awards, best drill awards and best police powers awards were also given out.

The full list of award winners can be viewed in the file below.

Terry Morley, Curriculum Manager for the Uniform Services Department, said: “The parade was fantastic and very well co-ordinated.

“I am very proud of the staff and the students.

“What a great end to a great year.”

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Alan Godson, said: “The parade was very good, very impressive! I didn’t realise we had so many talented people.”

The afternoon included a performance from the ‘Red Devils’, the Parachute Regiment’s world-famous freefall display team and a tug of war with audience participation.

Some of the students will now go on to a career in the forces, some will go on to university and others will return to the college for further study.
