Police issue warning on false reporting
Date published: 27 June 2011
Police in Rochdale are warning people of the consequences of making false crime reports.
Last Friday a false report of burglary was made in Heywood where it was claimed that several items of expensive electrical equipment had been taken.
Also last Friday, a false allegation was made where the victim claimed to have been robbed in Littleborough while carrying workplace takings to the bank.
Following a police investigation, those responsible have been issued with fixed penalty notices, and officers hope that harsh fines will deter others from breaking the law and falsely claiming they are victims.
Chief Inspector Mark Bell of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division said: "The false reporting of crimes is a real problem as it takes away officers and valuable resources from genuine crime victims. Most people who make these claims do so without realising the seriousness of their actions.
“When they make a false report to update their mobile phone, make an insurance claim or try to cover accidental damage they are breaking the law, and may be arrested or given a hefty fine alongside ending up with a criminal record.
"The message is clear – false reporting wastes police time and we treat it very seriously. It is essential that genuine victims receive the best possible service, and tackling the issue of false reporting is designed to help them."
