Health campaigner urges public to sign petition

Date published: 22 June 2011

A Rochdale health campaigner has praised the response from the public in signing an online petition regarding the future of health provision in the borough and is urging others to do the same.

In just two weeks, the petition, started by Councillor Jean Ashworth has had almost 650 signatures.

The petition states:

“We the undersigned petition the council to take all appropriate action within its power to ensure that the Borough and surrounding areas have adequate accessible Hospital Care.

“We feel that the NHS proposals to downgrade and remove services from the Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield Hospitals are leaving this Borough and the surrounding areas unsafe and without adequate accessible Hospital Care.”

Councillor Ashworth said: “I am hoping for over 1,000 signatures, there are 648 up to today, that is in just two weeks.

“It is important that people sign it and make their concerns heard.”

Councillor Ashworth added: “This has got the full backing from the Council and I think that is an important reason why people should sign. The Council recognises that the borough will be left unsafe.”

The ePetition runs from until the 2 August 2011.
