Memorial service to honour Heywood servicemen

Date published: 21 June 2011

A memorial service has taken place at Heywood Memorial to commemorate those who have lost their lives in Service since World War 2.

Councillor Alan McCarthy, on behalf of Heywood Township and the people of Heywood, laid a wreath on the memorial which is located behind the Cenotaph in Heywood.

Councillor McCarthy said:“On behalf of all Township Councillors and as the Chair of Heywood Township it was an honour to be present on the day we formally and officially recognised Corporal Barnes - Royal Marines and Seaman Taylor - Royal Navy by carving in stone their names on the new memorial.

“I hope the families of both Cpl Barnes and David Taylor find some comfort in the knowledge that the people of Heywood are very proud of their service personnel.”

“The new memorial for those that have died in service, the first in the country is testimony that, as always, the Township Councillors are fully supportive of our Armed Services.”
