Funding boost for sanctuary

Date published: 19 June 2011

A charity that aims to create a new bird and wildlife sanctuary in Rochdale has been given a £10,000 funding boost.

Rochdale Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary (RWBS) will use the money from the Big Lottery Fund to buy equipment for the new shelter.

The RWBS is working closely with Rochdale Council to find some suitable land to build it on.

News of the funding boost comes in the same week as the Charity Commission confirmed RWBS’s registration as a charitable organisation.

The charity’s chairwoman, Carley Smith, said the money is another step towards opening the new sanctuary.

She said: “We are delighted to have successfully bid for this money. It will be used to buy and build some of the equipment we need to open a full functioning sanctuary.

“We know how difficult it is to get funding like this in the current economic climate.”

Ms Smith added: “We are desperate to get the new place open so we can start to tend to sick or injured wildlife and birds.

“Unfortunately, the process is a complicated one. The charity’s founders are working very hard to complete it as soon as possible.

“We promise to keep you updated of our progress.”
