Hundreds turn out for Norden Carnival

The people of Norden came out in full force today (18 June) for the village’s annual carnival. Families lined the streets to watch the colourful parade pass by before enjoying an afternoon of fairground fun.

The theme for this year’s carnival was ‘Around the World in Eighty Days,’ this saw children and parents dress in a variety of outfits.

The procession left Caldershaw School at 1.00pm and travelled along Edenfield Road to the bus terminus and back along the road to the finish at Norden Community Primary School. At the school there was fair ground attractions, bouncy castles, face painting and more.

The parade included school and nursery children, bands and sports teams.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Jim Dobbin MP and Norden Councillors Wera Hobhouse, Ann Metcalfe and James Gartside were also in the procession.

The Mayor, Councillor Alan Godson described the carnival as “wonderful.”

Jim Dobbin MP added: “It is remarkable that the weather has kept off – again.

“This is always a good occasion. It is getting more and more difficult to get these things organised because local volunteers are needed, it is dependent on them sustaining their interest and effort and it is to their credit that it is taking place.

“The number of families, youngsters and teenagers shows that it is a good event, a good social event.”

Mr Dobbin was also the judge of the best dressed window. The winner was shoe shop Tip Toes, but he was keen to add “they all did a great job.”

Councillor Gartside said: “The atmosphere is fantastic; I think the whole of Norden is involved.”

Councillor Hobhouse concluded: “The sun always shines on Norden Carnival, it is always good fun. It is one of my favourite days of the year.”
