Rescue Team Leader invites walkers on Lancashire moorland challenge

Date published: 17 June 2011

Andy Simpson, leader of Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team, is inviting walkers from all over Lancashire and Greater Manchester to join him on a moorland challenge on the 2 July - but you'll need to be fit!

The challenge is to walk the whole of the Rossendale Way in one day, a mere 42 miles, with the aim of raising funds to keep the team operational. Walkers are asked to pay an entry fee and possibly raise sponsorship to do the walk but they'll be fed and watered along the route and given a well earned meal at the end of the day.

The event starts at 5.30am on Saturday 2 July at the Glory Public House, Burnley Road, Loveclough, Rossendale. And for those who think 42 miles in one day might be biting a little more off than they can chew, the team is offering the Half Way in a Day, an 18 mile route taking in just under half of the main route and offering a fantastic day out ambling amongst the moors overlooking Ramsbottom and Helmshore.

The Half Way route starts at 9am from Rossendale School, Bamford Road, Bury BL0 0RT and transport will be provided at the end to take walkers back to the school to pick their cars up. Route instructions will be provided and the team will be on hand all day to pick up walkers should the need arise.

Mr Simpson said: "I've done this route once before about 17 years ago and, whilst it was a big day out, the countryside you walk through is fantastic. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us this year and we can attract alot of people to the event"
