Ophthalmology service helps residents value their vision

Date published: 10 June 2011

The Ophthalmology Clinical Assessment and Treatment Service (CATS) is helping Rochdale residents keep their eyes healthy with the launch a set of top tips.

To coincide with Eye Health Awareness Week (June 13-19), Rochdale’s Ophthalmology CATS has detailed symptoms that could indicate eye conditions that require treatment, as well as simple recommendations for maintaining good vision. As well as regular eye tests, the tips include suggestions on diet and lifestyle that can help with good eye health.

Vision can deteriorate as a result of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy. According to the RNIB, around 2 million people have significant sight loss in the UK. This includes an estimated 80,000 people of working age and 25,000 children.

“Many people can pass off eyesight problems as part of the ageing process, or something that will pass in time, however it’s important to get your optician to check out any changes in your vision,” said Ericka Ashworth, service manager, Rochdale NHS Ophthalmology CATS. “If left untreated, some eye conditions could lead to permanent vision impairment, or even blindness. Our eyes are so important and there are a few simple precautions that all of us can take to make sure they’re protected.

“Even if you’re not suffering from any eye complaints, getting your eyes checked regularly is vitally important. Your optician will be able to track your vision and eye health and treat any minor issues before they become complications, and also potentially detect other conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.”

The Ophthalmology CATS, which is run by Care UK, offers treatments for eye conditions including cataract diagnosis and assessment, a glaucoma screening service, minor operations and general ophthalmology clinics.
