Police authority wins ‘Good Scrutiny Award’

Date published: 08 June 2011

Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) has picked up a national award for its scrutiny review of major events policing.

The Authority fought off strong opposition from Bristol City Council and Manchester City Council in the Raising the Profile category, winning a Good Scrutiny Award for its project ‘Preserving the Peace: The Policing of Major Events in Greater Manchester’.

The scrutiny commission highlights good practice and provides recommendations around a number of themes including planning and tactics, training and guidance, human rights and civil liberties, and community engagement.

Councillor Paul Murphy, Chairman of the GMPA, said: “A lot of work went into this project, not only on the part of the police authority but also from Greater Manchester Police and other partners.

“To be recognised for this work is a great achievement and further highlights the importance and impact of the scrutiny report.

“It is also a fitting tribute and legacy to the work led by the late Gloria Oates, who was Chair of the Scrutiny Commission and Vice Chair of the Police Authority.”

Organised by the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS), the awards celebrate good practice in public scrutiny and the contribution that non-executives make to achieving transparency, involvement and accountability. The winners were announced at CfPS’s 2011 annual conference and awards dinner in London on Thursday 2 June 2011.
