Council urges Waste Authority to reconsider closure decision
Date published: 06 June 2011
Rochdale Council is to ask Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority to reconsider its decision to close Peel Lane recycling centre in Heywood.
Council cabinet members have agreed that whilst they ‘recognise’ the need to make savings, they do not support the proposed closure and are urging GMWDA to identify alternative savings elsewhere.
The announced closure of the Peel Lane site comes as GMWDA tries to identify savings for over the next three years. As part of the savings process GMWDA agreed to rationalise the 25 Household Waste Recycling Centres across the conurbation.
In March GMWDA resolved in principle to undertake the closure of four sites at Chandos Street, Shaw; Clifton Road, Prestwich; Peel Lane, Heywood and Union Road, Bolton.
The Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, Colin Lambert, Councillor Jacqui Beswick and Councillor Alan McCarthy urged GMWDA to go back to councils and consult before any final decision is made.
The matter is to be brought back to the 17 June meeting of the Council for final ratification.
