Police issue burglar warning

Date published: 24 May 2011

Police are warning residents to secure their windows and doors following a spate of burglaries in Alkrington and Middleton.

During the past month there have been 21 burglaries in the Middleton area. In six of these burglaries, offenders gained access via insecure windows and doors.

In most cases vehicles were stolen after offenders took car keys from the property.

Crime Reduction Advisor Jackie Bell said: “While every effort is being made by the police to combat this type of offence, I would urge members of the public to ensure that their property is secure at all times.

“One in three burglaries happen because windows and doors are left insecure and in some cases burglars will simply walk along a street until they find an insecure home. By remembering to lock and shut your windows and doors, you can reduce your chances of falling victim to this distressing crime.

“Police have stepped up patrols in hotspot areas and are actively targeting persistent offenders. If you see anything suspicious then please contact the police on 0161 872 50 50 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
