Greater Manchester Police is gearing up to welcome tens of thousands of football fans to the region ahead of the League One and Two play-off finals.

The matches, between Stevenage and Torquay and Huddersfield and Peterborough will be contested at Old Trafford on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May 2011.

A major policing operation is underway to ensure all travelling fans have a safe and enjoyable time.

Allocated parking areas have been identified around the stadium and police are urging fans not to use unofficial parking areas.

Officers will also be on hand to assist those using public transport to get to the stadium.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts, Divisional Commander for Trafford, said: “I want to extend a very warm welcome to those sides involved in the play-off finals and all the dedicated fans that will be coming to Greater Manchester.

“Unfortunately not everyone will be going home happy but I hope all supporters enjoy the experience of watching their team in the play-off final in what I am sure will be an absorbing atmosphere in and around the stadium.

“The force has a wealth of experience when it comes to policing high-profile sporting events and you will find a large number of officers on hand to help make the day as an enjoyable experience as possible.”

Police have been working closely with licensed premises around the ground and officers will be on hand to direct supporters to nearby bars and restaurants upon arrival.

GMP will rigidly enforce the prohibition of on street drinking across Trafford including the area around the ground, where no one is permitted to drink alcohol from cans, bottles or any other open vessel.

Chief Superintendent Roberts added: “I hope everyone enjoys the occasion in the spirit of the game but I know emotions will be running high and I want to stress that anyone thinking of coming here with the intention of causing trouble can think again.

“We will not tolerate any sort of disorder, drink related or otherwise, and should you find yourself involved in criminal behaviour we will be more than happy to extend our hospitality to include a stay in one of our many police cells.”
