Help make a ‘mile of money’ for Kenyan orphans

Date published: 23 May 2011

A former Rochdale Council employee is appealing for help to raise much needed funds for children in a Kenyan orphanage.

Helen Retallic, 24, spent three weeks at the ‘Mamas Orphanage’ in Busia, Kenya earlier this year doing voluntary work, and the plight of the children there really touched her heart. She vowed to return to provide further help, and assist them with creating a nursery at the orphanage.

A container full of gifts will make the 4389 mile trip soon and residents are being asked to donate items or money in coins, which will hopefully form a ‘Mile of Money’ in Hare Hill Park this summer.

So far, with very generous donations, open days and bucket collections, over £1,000 has been raised, thanks to the assistance of staff at Victoria House in Littleborough.

Pupils and teachers at St James Primary School in Wardle have also agreed to help with fundraising, and a local businessman is paying for the 40 foot container.

Helen’s mum June Retallic, who works with adults at the Victoria House Day Centre said: “We’ve had some fantastic offers of support already from local shops and businesses, which is really touching.

“Helen has promised to help these children, who desperately need our help. Everything we raise will be used to help the orphans, who are constantly battling poverty, disease and deprivation.

“She will be really proud to return this year with help from the people of Rochdale.

“We’re just hoping that by the summer we’ve got enough coins to make the mile … that would be really special.”

If you can help, by donating children’s clothes, toys, school books, pencils, paper, musical instruments, shoes or even bicycles – they will be gratefully received at the Victoria House Day Centre, 31 Victoria Street, Littleborough.

Alternatively phone 01706 379296 to arrange collection.
