Avant-garde showcase of young hairdressers’ skills

Date published: 21 May 2011

Hairdressing students from Hopwood Hall College have put on a showcase of their creative skills in front of special guest judges Nicky and Sylvia Oliver.

Manchester’s celebrity hairdresser Nicky Oliver opened his salon 21 years ago and has since gone from strength to strength. Mr and Mrs Oliver are globally renowned hair and make-up artists and have many celebrity contacts.  So the students were, of course, absolutely thrilled when the duo agreed to judge the competition.

The students spent weeks planning and practicing to prepare for the competition in the hope of impressing the judges. All this hard work was reflected in the fabulous images that they produced making the judging rather hard.

However, after much deliberation, student Hayley Poles won the top prize for the stunning look she created, with second and third prizes going to Sadie Fraser and Kelley Lawrie. All three of the young ladies were awarded a surprise training day at the Nicky Oliver Academy.

Lisa Neild, Curriculum Leader for Hairdressing at the College said: “The whole group showed a standard of work that they should be very proud of and, as their tutor, I was immensely proud of their efforts.

“The College is in the preliminary process of forging a partnership with the Nicky Oliver Academy, so exciting things lie ahead.”
