Preview plans for town centre shopping and leisure scheme

Date published: 18 May 2011

Rochdale Development Agency is inviting residents to give their views on Genr8 Developments’ latest plans for Rochdale’s new town centre shopping and leisure development.

They also want to know what types of shops and leisure uses residents would like to see in the town centre.

Following last year’s public consultation on the town centre proposals, layout plans for the new scheme have been developed further and Genr8 Developments, are now eager to get more input so they can move to the next stage.

Mike Smith, Director at Genr8 Developments, said: “We’re keen to get residents’ views on the layout plans and the type of retail, leisure, food and drink outlets they want to see in the complex. This feedback will help us to attract and sign up companies to the development that residents want to see.”

The exhibition also updates residents on other regeneration projects across the town centres that are moving on at a pace. Rochdale Sixth Form College opened last year bringing 1,000 students into the town centre, and Aldi opened its store in November last year.

Construction of the new leisure centre on Entwisle Road has started along with the building of the new customer service centre, library and council offices on Smith Street. Preparations for Metrolink coming to the train station next year and to the town centre in 2014 are also underway.

Residents can see the plans and complete a questionnaire at exhibitions in the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre and the Wheatsheaf Centre from Tuesday 17 May to Friday 27 May, or by visiting www.rochdaletowncentreopportunity.com.
