Siddal Moor Sports College is taking shape
Date published: 17 May 2011
Pupils at Siddal Moor Sports College are celebrating after moving into brand new teaching facilities as part of a £14.5m investment. The opening of the new 3-storey teaching block, together with entrance plaza and car park, marks the completion of the first phase delivered through the BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme.
At the heart of the new teaching block is a vibrant and open atrium space which houses the school’s main learning resource centre with access to dedicated teaching spaces which have been designed to suit the school’s curriculum. The new building links seamlessly to existing dining facilities and specialist teaching accommodation. A new community entrance has also been created allowing easier access to the refurbished sports facilities and changing rooms.
The new building, which is due to be completed by the end of November, has been designed to be very energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions by providing good levels of insulation, natural ventilation and lighting wherever appropriate.
Energy efficient systems have been installed including daylight-linked and motion detection-controlled lighting, rainwater recycling and a biomass boiler to provide hot water for the new building. Construction materials have also been carefully chosen to reduce energy consumption and damage to the environment with a focus on timber from approved sources and recycled products.
Cheryl Eastwood, Executive Director for Rochdale Borough Council said: “It is very exciting to see these new facilities being opened across the borough. The first phase of the new Siddal Moor is a great asset for the school and will benefit the students enormously.”
