The RSPCA has received over 1,200 applications to become a PetRetreat fosterer following the nationwide launch last month - currently there is only 80 throughout England and Wales.
RSPCA PetRetreat temporarily looks after cats and dogs belonging to victims of domestic abuse. It provides foster care for the animals until they can be reunited in a safe and secure new home.
PetRetreat manager Carolyn Southwell said: “The response to the appeal has been absolutely amazing and I am thrilled that so many people out there have come forward to help. My heartfelt thanks go to every single person who applied.
“We hope that this will enable us to help more victims of domestic violence flee to their harrowing situation safe in the knowledge that their pets are being well looked after.”
The application forms are currently being processed and PetRetreat staff are asking applicants to be patient while they carry out the recruitment process.
