Oulder Hill Community School and Language College

Date published: 10 May 2011

Welcome back – we hope you all had a happy and relaxing Easter break. Please note that GCSE and A level exams begin shortly. It is therefore extremely important that parents and carers of all students involved support their children at least by ensuring that they revise thoroughly, and where possible, by helping them with their revision.

Congratulations to our highest attending forms for week commencing 2 May 2011. Forms 8K, 9E, 9G and 10G all achieved a wonderful 100% attendance – in other words every single student in those forms attended every single day. Forms 7C and 11A were the highest attending forms in their respective year groups with 99% attendance, with the rest of the school not far behind. This is a fantastic achievement and shows how much our students value good attendance and how our parents and carers also support this.

As part of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, students are participating in a 2-day practice expedition this weekend. Students, along with the staff that are supervising, will leave school at 8.00am on Saturday to be dropped off at their starting points – we look forward to seeing how they get on when they return.

On the Friday after we broke up for the Easter holidays, many staff and students took part in a sponsored swimathon to raise money for the NSPCC. Having set a target of £1000, we would like to be in a position to inform readers of whether we have met it - however due to the outstanding response our staff and students are still in the process of collecting and counting the money. More details to follow.

Also, just before the Easter holidays, Oulder Hill hosted the annual ‘Not Strictly Eurovision’ event. In total, 29 primary schools initially signed up to take part, of which 10 made it through to the finals which took place in the Gracie Fields Theatre. The standard from all schools was exceptionally high, however St Joseph’s RC Primary school came out the eventual winners with their rendition of the Spanish song “Yo voy a ser el rey leon,” sung beautifully by a group of 6 to 10 year olds. St Joseph’s were closely followed by Norden Community Primary School and St Thomas Moore RC Primary School in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. We would like to thank all the Oulder Hill staff who helped organise this event and also Odette Hunt for all her hard work. Also, it was an absolute pleasure to work with our partners from the primary schools across the Rochdale area so we would like to thank all of you for getting involved. The Theatre was full of parents, brothers, sisters and other family members who came to support the children and this was an absolute pleasure to see, so that you to everyone who came on the night. John Watson, Headteacher of Oulder Hill and one of the judges on the evening said that this was the most enjoyable event of this kind that he had seen.
