Staff and students from Hopwood Hall College’s Uniformed Public Services department are preparing to take part in a nationwide college cycle challenge for charity; in total, 13 colleges will cycle the Help for Heroes bear mascot around the country.
Public Services students and lecturers from up and down the country aim to carry the mascot from college to college, covering as much of England as possible.
The objective of the 20 day event is to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes, as well as raising awareness for the students who are studying in public services.
The event was kicked off at Bromley College, the organisers of the charity event, on 3 May and will finish back where it started 20 days later.
Hopwood Hall College students will pick up the Mascot on the 17 May from Blackburn College. The Hopwood team are hoping that the recent good weather continues and also that their colleagues and fellow students will dig deep to help them to hit their £500 fundraising target.
Curriculum Manager for Uniformed Public Services Terry Morley will be leading by example by taking part on his hand bike himself; Mr Morley was injured whilst on active service in 1991 with the Army and is now confined to a wheelchair; he explains why they feel it is important for the College to take part.
“At this time most Colleges and Uniformed Public Services Courses will have ex-students stationed over in Afghanistan and other areas of conflict and it is encouraging for them to know that we are always there to support them and to raise money for a very worthy cause in helping in the rehabilitation of our injured service men and women.”
