Tribute to the workers

Date published: 03 May 2011

Local people fell silent on Thursday (28 April) to pay tribute to those killed in the workplace.

Led by Rochdale Unison, representatives met at the workers memorial tree outside the Municipal Offices for a short service for Workers Memorial Day.

A two minute silence marked the day – a day to remember those who have died at work and to fight for improved health and safety standards to protect those still at work.

Unison’s Health and Safety Officer Peter Abrahams, said: “The reason we are here is to remember those who have perished and the 5480 people who will die today and every day, just to eke out a living.

“We all need to continue to fight for the rights of all working people, especially to return home - safe and sound!”
