Police plan for safe public holidays

Date published: 19 April 2011

Police in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton will be working hard to ensure that everyone can enjoy the forthcoming public holidays safely.

With two Bank Holiday weekends coming just a week apart, as well as street parties to celebrate the Royal Wedding and families having Cup Final parties, there will be many opportunities for people to get together, and this will often involve alcohol being consumed.

Unfortunately, increased levels of domestic abuse and alcohol-related disorder can be a consequence of this, and so police will be employing a range of tactics to deal with these issues should they arise.

To help reduce the chances of domestic abuse, officers are making reassurance visits to previous victims and those thought to be at risk, and reminding offenders that any breaches of restraining orders will be swiftly dealt with. Both victims and offenders are also being told where they can get help.

Police will also be promoting responsible management of licensed premises, as it is likely that many people will gather at these venues to enjoy the long weekends and watch the Royal Wedding and Cup Final.

To stop alcohol from falling into the wrong hands, officers will make frequent checks on licensed premises to ensure they are not selling to under 18s and take action against adults who buy drink for young people.

Superintendent John Graves of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division said: “We certainly don’t want to stop people from having a good time and enjoying the celebrations, but if things get out of hand then we have to respond firmly. I very much hope that we don’t have to intervene in any situations, but if that becomes necessary then we are prepared.

“With the warmer weather that we’re currently having, and the likelihood of there being more barbecues over the coming weeks, I’d like to remind people that criminals will be on the lookout for easy opportunities. Therefore make sure you keep your doors and windows locked and remember to store your garden furniture securely.”
