Calls for St George’s Day bank holiday

Date published: 19 April 2011

MEP Paul Nuttall has written to David Cameron calling for St George's Day to be declared a Bank Holiday.

"We've recently had the usual hoohah about St Patrick's Day and jolly good fun it was. It would be absolutely fantastic if as much credit was given to the patron saint of England.

"And, like an increasing number of English folk, I believe St George's Day should not only be celebrated but marked as a national holiday," said Mr Nuttall, UK Independence Party Euro MP.

"There has been an improvement in public recognition over the past couple of years but it is really still very low key.

"We have far fewer public holidays in this country that many European countries and this is one area where we really need to catch up," said Mr Nuttall, who is UKIP’s Deputy Leader.

“People are proud to be English and this is one way to shout it out loud.

"I have written to David Cameron asking for this matter to be given proper consideration," he added.
