Fundraiser prepares for 'Ironman' challenge

Date published: 19 April 2011

A Rochdale man is preparing to take part in a gruelling physical challenge called ‘Ironman UK’ to raise money for charity.

Tim Richardson, 43, of Turnstone Developments, is taking part in the triathlon to raise money for Family Action in Rochdale.

The triathlon includes a 2.4mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. The event takes place in Bolton on 31 July.

Mr Richardson’s involvement in the competition comes following re-joining the gym and working out with a personal trainer. He was advised to have a goal or something to focus his exercise on. After signing up for the event he decided because he was committing a lot of time to training he would raise money as well.

Mr Richardson, a former member of the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team, has set himself a target of £10,000 to raise for Family Action which will benefit young carers in Rochdale.

He said: “There is no particular reason for choosing this charity other than when I watch Comic Relief or Children in Need it is always the young children caring for a loved one that gets me.”

Mr Richardson, who, coaches juniors at the Rochdale Harriers and Athletics club, added: “I am as prepared at this point, with 15 weeks to go, as I can be.

“I am training for 20 hours a week.”
