Primary school pupils are 'eggsperts'

Date published: 18 April 2011

If you want to make sure you buy chocolate eggs that provide the best value for money this Easter, ask pupils at Norden Community Primary School.

These pupils know eggsactly which chocolate eggs are the most reasonably priced, adequately sized; have the most attractive and environmentally-friendly packaging and most importantly are the tastiest.

The children compared a Cadbury’s Buttons egg priced at £1, a Cadbury’s Flake at £3 and Galaxy £5 Easter egg.
Each year an Easter competition is run throughout Greater Manchester by trading standards services and is designed to test pupils’ skills in literacy, numeracy and science when considering the very important purchase of Easter eggs.
As part of an Easter competition, children at Norden Community Primary produced a lively and colourful display that was used as evidence for what they deemed to be the best value and worst value for money Easter eggs this year. Their thorough critiques meant they scooped first prize in the local heats across the borough as well as emerging second out of all the schools across Greater Manchester.

Andy Glover, Trading Standards Manager at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “There is an important lesson to be learnt by taking part in this fun Easter competition. It teaches young children about the concept of ‘value for money’. The pupils at Norden Community Primary School have shown they understand that quality is not always determined by price.”

Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Rosie Malik at Norden Community Primary School, said: “The children are extremely excited about the Easter holidays and the chocolate eggs they’ll soon be receiving. The competition has made them all Easter egg experts and they can now use their expertise to give their parents advice on how to get the best ‘value for money’ this year. I’m proud that their displays have been so successful in both heats.”

Rochdale Borough Council attended the school’s assembly on Friday 15 April 2011 and presented the school with £100 of Argos vouchers for being so successful in the competition.
