Hundreds take part in St George’s Day parade

Almost 300 youngsters took part in a St George’s Day parade today (Sunday 17 April 2011).
The parade, organised by the Rochdale District Scout Association, is an annual event attended by beavers, cubs and scouts.
The youngsters attended at St George’s Day service at the Parish Church on Sparrow Hill, where several leaders received long service awards, before marching to the Town Hall via Church Lane.
The march was led by the Littleborough Band.
On arrival at the Town Hall they were greeted by the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali.
The organiser and district commissioner, Chris McLaren was pleased with the turnout and the excellent weather.
Mayor Ali, said: “I think it has been an excellent day. The parade was excellent; all the young children have put on a fabulous display on a beautiful day.
“Many thanks go to the organisers and of course the parents for bringing their children down. I think they all enjoyed it.
“It has been a great afternoon and I hope the great work of the Scouts group will long continue.”
