Concert in aid of Mayor’s charities

Date published: 16 April 2011

People from across Rochdale joined together tonight (Saturday 16 April 2011) for a concert to raise money for the Mayor’s chosen charities.

Guests gathered at the Rochdale Town Hall for an evening of entertainment courtesy of Wardle Anderson Brass Band and the Rochdale Girls Choir.

Money raised from the event will go to Rochdale Borough Shopmobility and Parkinson’s UK Rochdale Branch – the Mayor of Rochdale’s chosen charities. The concert is one of a few remaining events left for Councillor Zulfiqar Ali before his Mayoral year ends.

Mayor Ali said: “I am really pleased that the Wardle Anderson Band and the Rochdale Girls Choir are taking part, they are both excellent.

“I praise everyone who has come to support this event, it is all for a good cause.

“I have had a great charity committee. Events like this are really nice, they get people in. I understand that times are tough but I want to do well for the charities.”

Band manager, Sarah Tucker, said: “We have got a lot of young players in the band and we are trying to do more gigs for charity so it is nice for the younger ones to be involved – especially in a hall as nice as this.”

Guests were treated to three sets by the band, one of which included Helen Rose, a singer from Wardle High School. The choir also performed twice.

The band’s CD ‘Forward March’ was also on sale, with £1 from each sale going to the Springhill Hospice.
