Damage caused to Town Hall
Date published: 16 April 2011
Members of the public have been praised for trying to stop a lorry driver who caused damage to the front of Rochdale Town Hall and then tried to leave.
The incident happened on Thursday (14 April 2011) afternoon at around 3.15pm.
The Leader of the Independent Alliance Party, Greg Couzens witnessed what happened.
He said: “I was walking back to the Town Hall at approximately 3.15pm and witnessed an altercation involving members of the public and a large articulated lorry, I saw the damage and the driver was not for stopping.
“I took photographs and went to speak to the driver, he was trying to drive away so I stood in front of the vehicle to prevent him doing so and take his photograph. Fortunately the photographs are clear enough to identify the driver.
“I have filed a report to the police and they assure me that they will take action.”
The photographs Councillor Couzens took are in the photo gallery opposite.
Councillor Couzens added: “I was absolutely livid that he damaged our beloved Town Hall and was more intent on leaving without reporting or leaving his details.
“A huge thank you must go out to the members of the public for starting the apprehension.”
