Artists get creative on ‘The Wall’

Date published: 16 April 2011

A group of artists from Rochdale have been putting their creativity to the test for the past three days by painting a wall in Sparth Bottoms.

The group, made up of friends and acquaintances, is called Involved Arts and has been set up to encourage people to show their creative side, to give them a chance to display their work and to brighten up some disused spaces within Rochdale.

Twelve people have been involved in painting ‘The Wall’ on Corporation Road - which was donated by Rochdale Van Breakers - since Thursday (14 April 2011).

The project is a "win-win situation" for the group and the van breakers because the artists have somewhere to paint and the wall outside the business is colourful and attractive.

Each artist has been given a section to work on and the art on display varies from graffiti, to sponge art and cartoons.

Group member, Cheryl Beswick said: “We want to expose local artists and promote creativity.

"Everyone who is here wants to paint and create.

"It has gone so well. It is so much more than we anticipated.

"Everyone is enjoying it.”

The work on 'The Wall' was not planned and has evolved depending on what each artist has decided to create.

'The Wall' is the second project the group has undertaken in the past month. They started with painting 'The Cube,' which is on the Exchange Shopping Centre Car Park to encourage people to come along to 'The Wall' and see what can be achieved.

It is hoped that the transformation of 'The Wall' will be completed by early next week.

The group are hoping to carry on doing more projects of this kind around the borough.
