Man assaults police officer and evades capture

Date published: 16 April 2011

Detectives are hunting a man who assaulted a police officer and evaded capture by jumping across a number of car bonnets.

At about 1.25pm on Tuesday (5 April 2011), police went to Heywood Sports Centre, West Starkey Street, Heywood, after receiving a report that a man wanted for criminal offences was there.

The man then assaulted a police officer as he left the sports centre.

He climbed on a car and jumped across three or four car roofs before driving off in a vehicle.

Detective Constable Janice Cruttwell, of Rochdale CID, said: “The once again demonstrates the dangers faced by police officers every day.

“I now want to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened. It happened just after lunchtime outside a busy sports centre so I am confident witnesses would have had a good view of the drama unfolding.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 8437 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
