Deeplish Primary School

Date published: 04 April 2011

‘We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo. How about you? We're gonna stay all day!’ This was year 3 and 4 children (and staff) on Monday, as part of their animal theme, they visited Blackpool Zoo and had a brilliant day. The children saw many animals and got to touch and even hold some of them. The children and their teachers revelled in the warm sunshine and fantastic surroundings. They came back tired but happy. Thank you children for yet again being a joy to be with and showing Deeplish Primary School at its very best.

Animals were also on the agenda for Mrs Akhtar's year 2 class when they visited Smithills Farm in Bolton. The weather was not very nice but did it dampen their spirits? No, not at all. They saw baby chicks and got to ride on donkeys and a tractor.

Mrs Ahmad, our Family Support Worker, took some of our parents on the first of, hopefully, many healthy walks around the area. The weather was lovely and the parents enjoyed it.

Jimmy Barker, from Hopwood Hall College, came in to our Key Stage 2 assembly to talk about a new after school Active Skills club he will be starting. Pupils will be learning non-contact boxing which is all about having fun without actually touching. The club starts on 12 April and will run for 12 weeks.

Mike Diggle, who is supporting Rochdale schools involved in the Manchester Arts Project, came in to work with some of our year 6 children. They are making a short film about the Aftermath of the Titanic which will be shown in June at the Victoria Baths in Manchester.

Work experience for our year 6 children started this week. Children are working at the Community Centre and the Children’s Centre. Thank you to the staff at these centres for your help in this; it is greatly appreciated.

The school council had a lively meeting this week. Topics for discussion were fundraising, achievement awards, talent show and boys/girls football days.

The new school is really taking shape now. We have had a constant stream of cement lorries arriving at the site this week laying the ground floor.

Children in Upper Years had the chance this week to join in a Health and Fitness after school club. The children worked with Rabeah Waheed who has taken aerobics classes for adults at the Community centre. The children did lots of exercises to music, games and races.

Susan Aggarwal came in again to work with some children in Upper Years on the 3D model to go in our new school entrance.

Mrs Roberts, Year 6 children went to do a Rock Salt Challenge at Kingsway Park High School on Friday. This involved using science equipment that they wouldn’t be able to access in primary school.

Attendance Champions this week were Mrs Akhtar’s and Miss Regan’s classes. Early Birds were Mrs Afzal’s and Mrs Clayton/Mr Dysch’s class. 100 per cent attendance prizes went to Umer and Imam. Well done.
