Rochdale marks 40th Independence Day of Bangladesh

Date published: 01 April 2011

The 40th Independence Day of Bangladesh was marked as Bangladeshis joined the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, councillors and community members to raise the Bangladesh Flag outside Rochdale Town Hall.

The Flag raising ceremony was organised by the Bangladesh Association and Community Project (BACP) and was followed by a social event in the town hall which was organized by the Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project (RBPP) who founded the “Rochdale & Sylhet Friendship Link” in 2009.

Mohammed Dobir Miah, the secretary of Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project said: “I pray for all the departed souls who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our beloved motherland that we know today as Bangladesh – may they rest in peace on the occasion of the 40th Independence Day.

“I hope that Bangladeshi’s living in the UK are able to learn and understand their identity and more importantly practice it.

“Year on year I see an increase in numbers at these events, and I think we have a duty to inform the wider community about the rich culture and heritage of Bangladesh and its people.

“I’m really impressed that we are attracting a diverse audience and I welcome everyone including members of the Indigenous and Pakistani community.”

Mohammed Dobir Miah  concluded: “The RBPP hope to exchange and foster mutual understanding between British Bangladeshis and indeed other communities. We hope to showcase the history, tradition and culture to the people of Rochdale in the future."
