Improvements made at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale

Date published: 29 March 2011

The results of the latest annual survey of NHS staff carried out by the Care Quality Commission shows that the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust is either meeting or exceeding the national average.

NHS staff were asked for their views on working in the NHS. The top four ranking scores for Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale are:

  • 83 per cent of staff using flexible working options
  • Just 6 per cent of staff suffering work related injury in the last 12 months
  • 3.51/5 for quality of job design
  • 3.65/5 for staff job satisfaction

There are also areas where the trust has significantly improved on last years results, including:

  • Staff appraised in the last 12 months from 64 per cent to 76 per cent
  • Staff having equality and diversity training in the last 12 months from 33 per cent to 48 per cent
  • Fairness and effectiveness of incident reporting procedures from 3.34/5 to 3.42/5

The results also showed that 15 per cent of staff have experienced harassment, bullying or abuse from a colleague.

Other results indicate a 12 per cent drop in the number of staff feeling there are good opportunities to develop their potential at work, and intention to leave work has gone up from 2.58/5 to 2.71/5.

Staff motivation at work has also gone down to a score of 3.76/5, a significant decrease since 2009, which is worse than the national average.

Jo Purcell, Executive Director for Strategy and Policy at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale said: “The NHS staff survey helps to highlight a number of important issues and as in previous years we will use the staff views given to introduce improvements to our working conditions, especially during these difficult periods of organisational change.

“In this year’s survey, we were pleased to see that we scored ‘significantly better’ than the national average and had improved in a range of areas including our staff having personal development plans, the provision of adequate materials, supplies and equipment to do a job and job satisfaction.

“We will be addressing those areas where we score ‘significantly worse’ as a priority.”
