Mr Bloom’s nursery comes to Meanwood

CBeebies allotment hero, Mr Bloom, was given a warm welcome at Meanwood Sure Start Children’s Centre last week as he dropped in to hand out gardening tips.

Mr Bloom, the well known children’s character from the BBC show Mr Bloom’s Nursery was the special guest at a stay and play session at Meanwood Children’s Centre.

He introduced himself to children and parents and told a story about growing vegetables. He brought the vegetables so the children could touch, and smell them he passed them round before leading an interactive seed planting session with the children.

He just had time to pop next door to Meanwood Primary School to pass on his green fingered expertise to an infant school assembly before having photographs and signing postcard with families back in the children’s centre.

The session encouraged families to think about what they eat how healthy it is and taught children about where food comes from.

Sam O’Neill Senior Early Years Worker said: “Mr Bloom’s visit was a real highlight in our stay and play timetable. Children and parents alike loved meeting Mr Bloom in real life, enjoyed learning more about vegetables and actually went away with pots of seeds that they had planted as well as lots of useful advice on growing their own flowers and vegetables.

“Following on from Mr Blooms visit we have now set up a garden centre in the early year’s room, and we have an interactive display in the entrance for the children to play with. We have also been planting seeds within our sessions.”
