Art group’s mission to get more people involved

Date published: 19 March 2011

Shoppers in Rochdale were intrigued by a colourful cube situated on the Exchange Shopping Centre car park today (Saturday 19 March 2011).

The Cube is a piece of work created by a group of friends from Rochdale who all have a keen interest in art.

The group, called Involved Arts have been working on The Cube for the past three days. Each member worked on a different face of The Cube creating the type of art they enjoy and using their preferred materials. The Cube includes graffiti, painting with sponges, artwork using cotton and work created from felt pens.

The group launched The Cube in a bid to get more people from the borough involved in art and for them to see something being created rather than just seeing the finished piece of work in a gallery.

The Cube will remain on the car park over the coming weeks. It is the first in a series of projects the team are working on.

In April they will take over a wall in the Sparth Bottoms area of Rochdale and are keen for others to get involved. The aim today was to show people passing by what can be achieved.

One of the group’s members Lee Pickering said: "We want to get people who don't want to go to a gallery to see art.

"It is something different and we want to get people interested."

Lewis Brownlie who was working on one part of the cube added: "We want to promote art around Rochdale - this is a taster to get people involved."

Antony Dore who created his piece by painting with sponges said: "We are getting a good reaction. I'm mad about art so it is nice to be involved."

Cheryl Beswick concluded: "It is going amazingly well, we are all having a laugh, I wish we could do this every day."
