Driver cut free after M62 crash

Date published: 19 March 2011

A teenage driver had to be rushed to hospital after a pile-up on the M62 motorway.

Fire-fighters had to cut the girl, said to be in her late teens, from her car after the horror crash, with paramedics fearing she had suffered a suspected fractured skull as well as leg and back injuries.

Six people needed treatment after the collision at junction 20 (Rochdale) on Saturday 19 March, when a Peugeot collided with a broken down Renault Clio, which was stationary in the fast lane of the westbound carriageway.

Four ambulances, the Hazardous Area Response Team and two fire engines attended the scene.

The accident happened at 11.00am, causing long queues of traffic to stretch back towards Leeds as the motorway was closed completely for over an hour.

Crew commander at Rochdale Fire service, Craig Lord, said: “The car had really been hit with some impact. The driver going at speed must have realised there was something stopped, swerved to avoid it and then hit the Clio. That sent it spinning into other vehicles.

“When we arrived there was glass and cars everywhere. It was a busy time of day and the car was a real mess. We had to cut the roof off to free the driver.”

The teen female Clio driver was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, along with another driver who was taken on a spinal board with possible neck and back injuries.

Four other casualties were treated for minor cuts and bruises at the scene.
